OVEREXCITABLE and/or SUPERSENSITIVE
Polish psychologist Kazimierz Dabrowski identified five areas in which children exhibit intense behaviours, also known as “overexcitabilities” (OE’s) or “supersensitivities.” They are psychomotor, sensual, emotional, intellectual, and imaginational. He was referring mainly to gifted children who tend to have multiple intensities, but these OE’s are also experienced by most HSP’s, children and adults.
Overexcitability (OE) is a heightened physiological experience of stimuli resulting from increased neuronal sensitivities. The greater the OE, the more intense are the day-to-day experiences of life. This intensity felt is also the life experience of HSP’s. It also has the same physiological basis.
The primary signs of the five areas of intensity in Overexcitability and/or High Sensitivity are:
- Surplus of nervous energy (can express itself in hyperactivity, especially in children)
- Heightened awareness of all five senses: sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing
- Activities of the mind, thought and thinking about thinking (penetrating insight, for instance)
- Vivid and free play of imagination (part of what Dr Elain Aron referred to as the “rich inner world” of an HSP)
- Exceptional emotional sensitivity
My holistic and Naturopathic approach can assist a person to make the best of the above traits while maintaining great health and well-being.
