HSP 'Survival Kit'
Some things that have helped clients (HSP’s) ‘survive’ and then embrace their sensitivity in life
a) Meditation – All forms of meditation, mindfulness and relaxation techniques are extremely beneficial. I have found for myself and clients the most beneficial form of Meditation for HSP’s was developed by Dr Ainslee Meares – “Stillness Meditation” (see below).
b) Natural Medicine – As a Natural Therapist I experience a higher representation of HSP’s in my private practice. Instead of the normal 15-20 % found in the general population, I would estimate that 40-50% of my clients are HSP’s. HSP’s often experience stronger responses from clinical doses of medications, including a greater number of and more intense physiological side-effects. (They will often respond better to ‘sub-clinical’ doses.) As a consequence, they may seek out and be more receptive to the less invasive and subtler Natural Medical approaches to their health management.
c) Dietary considerations – Often HSP’s will have ‘sensitivities’ to certain foods. It is important to identify and remain aware of these. It is even more important for HSP’s to eat when relaxed and in an environment (where possible) that they find relaxing and not OVERSTIMULATING.
d) Lifestyle considerations – It is critical to at the very least get the ‘Me’ time balanced with ‘Social’ time. Time-outs are a must.
e) Work/Career choices – Most HSP’s need to feel that their work is meaningful, a good pay-check alone is not enough on its own. They also hate behind the scenes work politics!
